Burney Falls — 129ft Block in California
Burney Falls is a 129-foot block waterfall in Shasta County, California, reached by drive-up access over 0.2 miles.
Burney Falls is a 129-foot block waterfall in McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park in northern California — famous for being fed by an underground spring system rather than surface runoff, which means it flows at exactly the same volume year-round. About 100 million gallons per day pour over the volcanic basalt cliff, with hundreds of small spring outlets visible across the cliff face creating a 'lacework' effect. Theodore Roosevelt called it 'the eighth wonder of the world' during his 1905 visit. Drive-up access from the parking lot is a few hundred feet to the main overlook.
What to expect
Drive into McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park (north of Redding, CA via Highway 89). Pay the state park entry fee. Park at the main lot. Walk a few hundred feet to the iconic overlook. The 1-mile Falls Loop Trail descends to the base of the falls and back up via a different route — easy hiking. Pair with a Lake Britton boat trip or Lassen Volcanic National Park (90 minutes south).
