The U.S. side (Niagara Falls State Park, the oldest state park in the country, founded 1885) hosts the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls; the Canadian side faces the larger Horseshoe Falls and offers the wider panoramic view. The Maid of the Mist boat tour (US) and Hornblower Niagara (Canada) take visitors to the base of the falls in the spray. It's both a natural and an industrial attraction — extensive hydroelectric and tourism infrastructure surround the falls.

What to expect

Drive into Niagara Falls State Park (NY side) — parking lots throughout. Free park entry; attractions inside (Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds, observation decks) charge separately. The viewpoints at Prospect Point, Terrapin Point, and Goat Island provide different angles. The Cave of the Winds tour takes you onto wooden walkways at the base of Bridal Veil Falls. For the full panoramic view, cross the Rainbow Bridge to the Canadian side (passport required). Plan a full day; Niagara is not a quick stop.
