Mina Sauk Falls — 132ft Cascade in Missouri
Mina Sauk Falls is a 132-foot cascade waterfall in Iron County, Missouri, reached by a moderate hike over 3 miles.
Mina Sauk Falls is Missouri's tallest waterfall — a 132-foot multi-tier cascade on the slope of Taum Sauk Mountain (Missouri's highest point, 1,772 feet) in the St. Francois Mountains of southeast Missouri. The waterfall is ephemeral, running heavily in spring (March-May) and after major rains, often dry from July through fall. The 3-mile loop trail through Taum Sauk Mountain State Park climbs over rock-strewn Ozark ridges with significant elevation. It's one of the more genuine wilderness experiences accessible in Missouri.
What to expect
Drive into Taum Sauk Mountain State Park (about 90 minutes south of St. Louis). Park at the trailhead near the Taum Sauk Mountain summit. The 3-mile loop trail descends to the falls and returns. Rock-strewn Ozark trail conditions; sturdy footwear essential. The falls themselves run primarily in spring; check rainfall reports before driving. Pair with Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park (10 minutes east) for the famous river-eroded shut-in formations.
