Toccoa Falls — 186ft Horsetail in Georgia
Toccoa Falls is a 186-foot horsetail waterfall in Stephens County, Georgia, reached by drive-up access over 0.2 miles.
Toccoa Falls is a 186-foot horsetail waterfall on the campus of Toccoa Falls College in northeast Georgia — taller than Niagara and accessible via a 100-yard paved path from the college's gatehouse, where you pay a small fee to enter the grounds. The site is famously associated with the 1977 Toccoa Falls Dam disaster, when a dam upstream failed and flooded the college, killing 39 students and faculty; a memorial near the falls remembers the victims. The falls themselves are a near-vertical ribbon down a granite cliff face, framed by mountain laurel and rhododendron.
What to expect
Drive to Toccoa Falls College (north of Toccoa, GA). Stop at the gatehouse and pay the small grounds fee ($3-5). Park in the visitor lot. Walk the 100-yard paved path to the falls overlook. The path is wheelchair-accessible. The 1977 dam disaster memorial is along the path. The college operates the area as both an active campus and a public attraction; respect college signage. Pair with Tallulah Gorge State Park (15 minutes east) or the Currahee Mountain Band of Brothers WWII site.
