Best Waterfall Photography Tips

Waterfall shoots are humid, bright, and full of spray. These tips keep your gear dry and your exposures on point.

Control shutter speed

  • Start at 1/5 second for silky flow, then bracket faster options in case you want texture.
  • Use a 3-stop ND filter when shooting in midday sun so you can keep ISO low.

Protect your optics

  • Carry a microfiber towel in a zip bag so spray doesn't soak your cloth.
  • A collapsible lens hood doubles as a shield on windy overlooks.

Compose with foreground

  • Look for mossy logs, trail rails, or people in bright jackets for scale.
  • Switch to vertical orientation for horsetail ribbons—horizontal frames often waste space.
